Why Yoga and Freedive?
When you practice Yoga and Freedive together, a greater sense of awareness is achieved in all the following levels:

1. Mental Clarity
When diving, mental clarity plays a crucial role in staying focused and environmentally conscious. Our Caribbean Yoga Freedive retreat focus on breath and body awareness. This instils a stronger sense of presence for greater concentration, which facilitates freediving.

2. Body Alignment
The art of yoga teaches people to pay attention to their alignment, posture, joint movements, and flexibility. This helps them reach deeper layers of muscle tissue, which is needed for moving underwater when practicing fining and duck diving techniques.

3. Breathwork
Pranayama is the technique of active breath control used during yoga practice and is just as important during freediving. Both activities require you to be aware of your breathing, which helps you stay calm underwater for longer. The 5 pranayama techniques passed down from Master C. Rajasekharan Naire to Yoga with Perumal are taught here to enhance your freedive skills. At our Turks and Caicos Yoga & Freedive Retreat in Pine Cay Samantha Kildegaard will instruct breathing techniques specific to freediving to achieve optimal results when going underwater.

4. Building strength
Focusing on strength in yoga poses increases control, fluidity, and grace, which is how a freediving body must move in the water. This supports your body during dives, allowing you to go underwater while using less energy.

5. Connecting Body and Mind
It is important for us to connect mind and body. Bringing awareness to our internal self through yoga practice strengthens this connection in all parts of life, but especially in freediving, where focusing on the present moment plays a critical role.

6. Overcoming Fear and Anxiety
Freediving to depths beyond our comfort zone requires us to conquer fear and anxiety. When diving on a single breath of air, you should remain calm and relaxed. Practicing yoga gives us the tools to deal with fear and anxiety, which are normal when venturing into unknown territory. Yoga is about controlling our minds, which is also key required for freediving.

How to Get Started:
Step 1: Proper breathing for freediving.
Before freediving, you must know how to control your breathing to relax. Yoga helps control breathing. Learn how to breathe properly and be guarded against signs of stress or anxiety while underwater. We will learn yoga with Perumal breathing techniques from the 5 Pranayama to expand your respiratory capacity, along with freediving breathing techniques taught by Samantha Kildegaard.

Step 2: Prepare yogic poses for going underwater.
Yoga poses are beneficial for freediving. It is important to practice these poses at the surface before freediving into the ocean.

Yoga asana helps create physical freedom, enabling greater freedom of movement while you are underwater.

Step 3: Begin Slowly
When practicing freediving, it's important to be able to control your buoyancy so you can move freely underwater.

Move smoothly and slowly in Yoga with Perumal sequences. Doing this from one yoga pose to the next improves efficiency and performance when freediving since the body does not have to work against gravity.

Step 4: Visualization and Cognitive Clarity
Visualization is a big part of sports psychology and also of freediving. The visualization techniques we use at the end of our yoga classes come into play when underwater with Miss Kildegaard. Freediving requires not only physical abilities but also mental concentration.

Step 5: Always Know Your Limits
No matter what level we reach while practicing yoga freediving, we should always be conscious about our surroundings as well as respectful of the marine life underwater. Always carefully listening to the briefing before entering the ocean and avoid touching, chasing or retrieving anything underwater, taking with you only memories.
